Getting Started

From one tree to the End, in the order most players go. Each step links to the page with the full details and numbers.

You start on the Sky Island: one dirt block, one oak tree, and nothing else as far as you can see. The guide book in your inventory covers the basics; this page goes further.
A working island: barrels, a bank of nine sieves and storage, all from one tree.

  1. Don't fall, and save the tree#

Take the logs but keep the dirt block. Leaves drop saplings: replant one straight away. Make a crafting table and a Wooden Crook from sticks.

Break leaves with the crook rather than by hand. You get more saplings, plus Silkworm. After you have chopped fifty logs or played for forty minutes, leaves broken by hand can let out a Rustler.

  2. Make dirt#

Craft a wooden barrel and fill it with leaves, saplings and food: it composts into Dirt. Saplings fill it fastest (4 per block). Use the dirt to grow your island and plant more trees. An empty barrel also fills with water when it rains.

  3. String from silkworms#

Use a silkworm on leaves. The infestation spreads, and once the leaves turn white, break them for String. Nine string craft a String Mesh.

  4. Your first sieve#

Craft a sieve, put the string mesh in and sift dirt. You get Stone Pebble, seeds and more. Four pebbles in a square craft Stone. Mine it for cobblestone, then make stone tools and a furnace.

Hold Shift over a block in your inventory to see what it sifts into. Hold a mesh at the same time to see only what that mesh can find.

  5. Water without a bucket#

A wooden crucible squeezes water out of leaves and saplings. A Unfired Clay Bucket fired in a furnace carries water forever; clay comes from dust in a barrel of water (step 7).

  6. Crush, sift, repeat#

Craft a hammer. It crushes Cobblestone into Gravel, then Sand, then Dust. Each sifts into something different.

Gravel gives Flint for a Flint Mesh, and ore pieces: Gravel with a Flint Mesh (15% + 5%), Red Sand with a Flint Mesh (10%). Four ore pieces craft into raw ore, or smelt one piece into a nugget.

  7. Clay, porcelain and lava#

Drop Dust into a barrel of water for Clay. Clay and bone meal make Porcelain, which crafts an Unfired Porcelain Crucible. Fire it in a furnace.

Set the porcelain crucible over a torch (or better, fire or lava) and fill it with cobblestone: it melts into lava. Keep lava in a stone barrel; a wooden one catches fire.

  8. Stone, obsidian and the Nether#

A barrel of water with lava flowing on top makes Stone. A barrel of lava with water on top makes Obsidian. Build a portal.

The Nether on a Sky Island is empty too. Bring cobblestone and build out. A barrel of lava turns Redstone into Netherrack, Glowstone Dust into End Stone and Coal into Blackstone.

  9. Better meshes#

Each mesh crafts from the one before it: string, flint, iron, gold, diamond, then netherite at a smithing table. Better meshes find rarer things, and the same block gives different drops with each mesh. Compare them on the sieve page.

  10. Witch water#

Drop Ancient Spores into a barrel of water to brew witch water. It turns sand into soul sand, villagers and other mobs into something else, and a barrel of it slowly changes the blocks around it.

  11. The End#

End Portal Frame blocks are craftable from end stone and obsidian. Or skip the portal: an End Cake (eyes of ender around a cake) takes you to the End with every bite.

  12. Hands free#

Turn on the machines: an auto sieve, an auto hammer and a cobblestone generator, each in five tiers. Hoppers feed them, chests underneath collect, and redstone pauses them.

Where the key resources come from#

The first mesh that finds each item, and the block to sift. Better meshes usually find more; see the full tables.
